Arctic zonation

zonation cover newPALEOZOIC TO CENOZOIC BIOSTRATIGRAPHIC ZONATION OF THE ARCTIC

Summary

The four volume report documents more than 100 palynological and micropaleontological zones and subzones for the Silurian to Holocene, including the designation of type and reference sections for each zone. Stratabugs plots, including logs and lithostratigraphy, illustrate the development of the zones in representative wells from the Chukchi Sea, northern Alaska, Canadian Beaufort, Banks Island and Sverdrup Basin.

The zonation is integrated with changes in sea-surface and air temperature, including the Cenozoic greenhouse to icehouse climatic shift, as well as changes in oceanography, and connections with marine and terrestrial biotas to the south.

A succession of climatic datums are defined for the Cenozoic, enabling correlation with the absolute time scale, and the climatic, oceanographic and plate tectonic events that impacted on the greenhouse to icehouse climatic shift, as well  as biotic changes in the Arctic.
