Beaufort study

STRATIGRAPHIC SYNTHESIS OF 54 WELLS, CANADIAN BEAUFORT MACKENZIE BASIN (BMB)

BMBLOCATION MAP 2The study integrates BRI’s palynological data with published Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and Canadian National Energy Board (NEB) lithostratigraphic and foraminiferal data for 54 key BMB wells, providing a consistent stratigraphic framework for the region.

The six volume report includes the following databases and plots:

[1] PLOTS SHOWING DIFFERENT GSC AND NEB WELL PICKS AND THE LATEST INTERPRETATIONS FOR ALL WELLS

The different interpretations are shown as sets of columns for each well:

Left columns with the finalized stratigraphy

  • Chronostratigraphy showing the 2012 INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON STRATIGRAPHY (ICS) and pre-2012 ICS schemes to illustrate the alternative assignment of the PETM interval to the early Eocene and late Paleocene respectively.
  • Well logs
  • Consensus sequence/lithostratigraphy based on the three data sets (Dixon & Peach, 1988, Dixon, 1990 and the NEB) and the biostratigraphy.
  • Palynological zones
  • Interpretation of McNeil’s (1989) micropaleontological zones based on the present study

Right columns showing previous interpretations:

  • Sequence stratigraphy of Dixon & Peach (1988)
  • Sequence stratigraphy of Dixon (1990)
  • Sequence stratigraphy of the Canadian NEB
  • Interpretation of McNeil’s (1989) micropaleontological zones based on the present study

[2] RANGE CHARTS

BRI’s quantitative biostratigraphic data are fully documented for the 54 wells as range charts in Excel and Stratabugs, including well logs and climatic datums, as defined in BRI’s climatic-zonal scheme (low-resolution image below):

Arctic Cenozoic zonation[3] STRIP PLOTS

The consensus sequence and lithostratigraphic picks, micropaleontological and palynological zones, and ages are synthesized in four sets of ‘strip logs’, which illustrate the distribution of sequences and stratigraphic breaks in: [1] western Beaufort wells, [2] central Beaufort wells, [3] proximal Beaufort wells, and [4] eastern Beaufort wells.

These plots illustrate the distribution of units across the region, including the age and duration of stratigraphic breaks.
